Historical Information about the German 1939 Iron Cross 2nd Class

The Iron Cross 2nd Class was a continuation of the famous Prussian medal introduced in 1813 (shown on reverse of the cross). This version is the one that was re-introduced in 1939 (year shown on the obverse).

The official criteria for the award was a single act of bravery in the face of the enemy, or actions that were clearly above and beyond the call of duty. However, in later years of the war, this award was given more liberally and is estimated that 5 million 2nd class iron crosses were awarded until the end of the war.

The Iron cross 2nd class was worn as follows:

  • On day of award, cross and ribbon hanging from the second button of the tunic.
  • When in formal dress, the entire cross was worn mounted alone or as part of a medal bar.
  • For everyday wear, only the ribbon was worn from the second hole in the tunic button.
