M40 German Army Tropical Field Cap (DAK)

A true Afrikakorps Cap

The German Tropical Field Cap (Afrikamütze) is made from the army-issue olive cotton twill fabric. The BEVO eagle and the national cockade are machine stitched.

The current production batch uses a cut-edge BEVO eagle rather than the folded-edge finish used on some earlier batches. This simpler construction helps keep the cap economically priced while retaining the correct overall appearance.

The Lining for this DAK cap is red cotton, as used in all German army tropical headgear.

Historical Information about the m40 Tropical Cap (Afrikamütze)

The Heer tropical field cap (Tropen-Fliegermütze) was widely issued to personnel serving in North Africa, the Mediterranean or the southern Front. Originally, caps were issued with a soutache, featuring the waffenfarbe of the branch of service, but an order to remove this was issued on the 10th July 1942. Subsequently, tropical caps manufactured after this date were issued without soutache.

The Luftwaffe units in Africa, such as members of the Brigade Ramcke, were issued army m40 Tropical Field caps. The Heer insignia was replaced by the insignia on the Luftwaffe Side Cap.

This model was designed in 1940, as part of the German Tropical Uniform for the DAK. That is why we refer to this cap as m40 model, not m41.
